Heavy Sweater’s Guide to Staying Dry

excessive sweating

For many people, confidence is a key factor in determining overall success. There are many things that can hinder our confidence. It’s not uncommon to want to change something about our bodies: longer eyelashes, bigger lips, brown sun spots, sagging skin…the list goes on and on. In fact, 82% of women think that wearing make-up increases their self confidence. But one of the biggest crushers of confidence is excessive sweat, or hyperhidrosis.

Nobody likes to sweat, but it’s a natural bodily function designed to cool us down in periods of overexertion or hot conditions. If you’re somebody who sweats a lot, there are many small steps you can take to alleviate the embarrassment of excessive sweating.

First, consider upgrading to a clinical antiperspirant. Many store-bought deodorants and antiperspirants just don’t cut it for excessive sweaters. Look for brands with an aluminum chloride content of at least 12%. You can usually find these at the store, but if needed, your doctor can also write a prescription. Once you find one, it may take some time to reach full effect, but when it does, you’ll be feeling dry for days.

Clothing is an important aspect when it comes to excessive sweating. Look for breathable fabrics such as cotton, and remember to dress for the season. Darker colors are better at hiding sweat stains, but they also tend to be hotter. In times of doubt, don’t be afraid to throw on an extra sweat-absorbing undershirt.

You may not realize it, but diet is a huge factor when it comes to excessive sweat. Spicy foods are a major trigger for sweating, so avoid them as often as possible. Caffeine is also known to increase sweat levels, so be sure to moderate your intake.

Finally, a great way to moderate your sweat levels is through exercise. It may seem backwards, but frequent cardio and aerobic workouts release endorphins, which promote relaxation and lower stress hormones. Frequent exercise may be the long-term solution you need to treat your excessive sweating issue.

Overall, excessive sweat isn’t the end of the world. It is an easily treatable condition, and if you take the right steps, you can regain your confidence.
